The American Road & Transportation Builders Association has an unparalleled history of promoting safety in the transportation construction industry. For nearly 105 years, safety has been one of the hallmarks of ARTBA’s leadership for our industry.

To improve safety for workers, pedestrians and motorists, ARTBA works to bring together national transportation and safety leaders to better understand the complex and intricate interaction during all aspects of transportation construction. ARTBA is committed to building a national discussion and consensus on all relevant transportation safety matters.

In recent years, ARTBA has devoted significant resources to assist members with their safety needs.

Successful companies in our industry have demonstrated time and again that good training programs are the foundation for a SAFE, HEALTHFUL and PRODUCTIVE workplace. ARTBA is committed to developing and presenting course material dedicated to improve ROADWAY SAFETY.

The reason for our emphasis is simple: good safety practices protect lives and preserve our industry’s most valuable and non-replaceable resource: its workers.

Over 1,000 people are killed every year in roadway work zones; over 100 of those deaths are workers who are simply trying to provide a livelihood for their families and improve roadways for the traveling public.

ARTBA has developed a number of training programs. Many are offered free of charge through grants from federal agencies.

Since 2003, ARTBA has received funding from OSHA through the Susan Harwood grant program to improve workplace safety for road building professionals.

In partnership with the National Safety Council and CNA Insurance, a grant course, the Roadway Safety Four-Hour, specializes in the four areas which injure and kill workers the most according to insurance data. The course covers runovers/backovers, ergonomics, fleet safety, and management commitment. In 2004, this course was conducted for over 500 attendees. This course is free for attendees.

We also offer the only OSHA 10-Hour accreditation course specific for our industry. All participants completing this course will receive the OSHA 10-Hour card. Courses are scheduled at roadway conferences, as stand alone events, and under direct contract across the country.
